When most people think about forests, they picture timber – logs stacked at sawmills or lumber stacked at a construction yard. But forests offer far more than wood. Fruits, resins, medicinal plants, honey, bamboo, rattan, and countless other biological resources are harvested from forests every single day by hundreds of millions of people who never cut down a single tree. These are Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) – and for a large share of the world’s rural poor, they are not supplementary income but a primary lifeline.

What are Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs)?
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), NTFPs are all goods of biological origin other than wood derived from forests and other wooded land. Both ENDS, an environmental organisation that works extensively with forest communities, defines them as “all biological materials, other than timber, which are extracted from forests for human use.” This includes not just trees, but all plants, fungi, and animals for which the forest ecosystem provides habitat.
The range of NTFPs is remarkably wide. Common examples include edible nuts, wild fruits, mushrooms, seeds, medicinal and aromatic plants, honey, resins, gums, bamboo, rattan, lac (a resinous substance secreted by insects), silk, spices, and animal products like game meat and feathers. In India specifically, prominent NTFPs include mahua flowers, tamarind, sal leaves, tendu leaves (used to wrap beedis), chironji seeds, and amla (Indian gooseberry).
It is important to distinguish NTFPs from commercial plantation crops. Conservation International points out that NTFPs grow naturally in forest ecosystems and simply need to be harvested – they do not require intensive agricultural management. Products like coffee or bananas grown on managed plantations do not qualify as NTFPs, even if grown in tropical regions.
CIFOR-ICRAF, a leading international forest research institution, notes that harvest of NTFPs ranges from wild collection all the way to semi-domesticated farming, and they come not only from natural primary forests but also from managed, secondary, or even degraded forests. This makes NTFPs accessible even in regions where primary forest cover has diminished.
Economic and cultural importance of NTFPs
The scale of NTFP dependence globally is striking. FAO data shows that in India alone, NTFPs support close to 275 million people, with indigenous peoples and local communities deriving up to 40 percent of their annual income from NTFP collection. In Europe, non-wood forest products represent an estimated economic value of €23 billion per year. At the global level, FAO estimated that NWFPs generated US$88 billion in 2011, and the market has only grown since.
For tribal and forest-fringe communities in India, the economic role of NTFPs is especially critical. Research published by the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, estimates that NTFPs can constitute up to 35 percent of annual household income for tribal households. A study in Jharkhand found that NTFPs contribute between 20 and 40 percent of annual income for tribal families, with women making up 71 percent of NTFP collectors – underscoring the central role women play in this sector.
Beyond economics, NTFPs carry deep cultural and spiritual significance. CIFOR notes that many NTFPs hold cultural value as totems, incense, or ritual items, and contribute directly to community health through traditional medicine. A case study from the Gond and Baiga tribal communities of Balaghat District in Central India illustrates this vividly: the collection of lac resin from host trees like Palas and Kusum has long motivated villagers to preserve those very trees, tightly weaving ecological conservation into cultural practice. Similarly, mahua flowers hold both ritual and economic importance across several tribal communities in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.
NTFPs also serve as a critical safety net. When crops fail or livelihoods are disrupted by drought or flood, forest-dependent families fall back on NTFPs for food and cash income. A systematic review published in ScienceDirect in 2025 found that NTFPs have the potential to increase household incomes by 19 to 78 percent in forest-fringe communities in Africa and Asia – provided market access and policies are supportive.
Challenges in NTFP management and trade
Despite their value, NTFPs face serious threats. Resource depletion due to overexploitation is the most immediate. As demand from national and international markets rises, traditional restraint in harvesting often gives way to commercial pressure. FAO’s Unasylva journal documents how prices of chironji seeds in India increased more than 150 times within five years, prompting widespread premature harvesting that seriously degraded the resource base. In Asia, rising rattan prices in the 1980s and 90s led to rapid overexploitation, destroying local resources and leaving communities without a key income source.
FAO’s harvesting guidelines highlight that determining a sustainable harvest level depends on ecological information – volumes, reproduction rates, population dynamics – that is rarely available in tropical and forest-fringe regions. The absence of sound resource assessment methodologies makes sustainable management of NTFPs structurally difficult.
Market barriers compound the problem. Tribal collectors, who do most of the actual work, are often the least rewarded. FAO reports that in India, tribal NTFP gatherers sometimes receive as little as 10 to 40 percent of the actual market price, with the remainder captured by middlemen and contractors. Weak market infrastructure, poor transportation links, and lack of storage and processing facilities prevent collectors from adding value to their produce before selling it.
Policy and legal barriers further restrict communities. Nationalisation of certain NTFPs in Indian states – for instance, Madhya Pradesh nationalised bamboo, sal seeds, and tendu leaves – required tribal people to sell exclusively to Forest Department-appointed contractors, often causing payment delays and reduced income. Research on NTFPs and tribal livelihoods in India identifies weak implementation of the Forest Rights Act as a recurring obstacle, since without secure tenure and access rights, communities have little incentive to manage forest resources sustainably.
There is also a knowledge erosion problem. The Gond and Baiga case study found that traditional NTFP knowledge is declining among younger generations, who are increasingly disengaging from forest-based livelihoods in favour of other employment, further weakening community-based sustainable management systems.
Promoting sustainable NTFP use
Addressing these challenges requires a combination of ecological, economic, and policy interventions. Several strategies have shown measurable results.
Community-based forest management and tenure security
The most foundational step is securing community rights over forest resources. Both ENDS consistently emphasises that securing tenure and access rights is the most important prerequisite for communities to invest in sustainable NTFP management. India’s Joint Forest Management programme, in which local communities share responsibilities and benefits with the State Forest Department, is one such framework. Programmes like India’s Van Dhan Yojana, launched in 2018, specifically target tribal income enhancement through NTFP value addition and have shown early promise in states like Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
Sustainable harvesting guidelines and traditional knowledge
Sustainable harvest levels must be based on ecological data, but traditional knowledge can bridge the gap where formal science is absent. Studies from tribal communities in northeast India recommend using traditional knowledge in NTFP management, promoting mixed-species plantation in forest gaps, and improving community control over forest governance. Integrating this knowledge into formal management plans makes monitoring both more accurate and more inclusive.
Value addition and market linkages
Moving beyond raw produce to processed products is a key strategy for increasing the share of value that reaches collectors. Research from Odisha highlights how organising Self-Help Groups to process mahua flowers into food supplements or beverages significantly raised tribal incomes and simultaneously incentivised conservation of the mahua tree. Similar models with tamarind, lac, and amla products have helped communities capture a larger share of the value chain. FAO’s Action Against Desertification programme promotes community-based value chains for NTFPs like gum arabic, honey, and balanites oil in African drylands, demonstrating that the model is replicable across diverse ecological contexts.
Policy reform and fair trade certification
Researchers and institutions consistently call for policy environments that protect customary rights, reduce barriers to NTFP commercialisation, and improve price realisation for collectors. A 2024 systematic review in Forestry Economics Review recommends that policymakers focus on safeguarding indigenous knowledge, designing workable capacity-building schemes for NTFP enterprises, and reducing the cost and complexity of certification processes. Fair trade and organic certification for NTFPs – already applied to products like Brazil nuts from the Amazon and Mahua in India – can improve market access and fetch premium prices.
Investing in research and infrastructure
Conservation International’s work in Peru shows the value of private investment in NTFP enterprises: by supporting small businesses around products like açaí and vanilla, and integrating these into REDD+ conservation frameworks, communities receive income while forests are protected. Similar investment models, combining impact financing with community-led enterprise, are needed across tropical Asia and Africa where NTFP dependence is highest.
Ultimately, forests are not just standing timber waiting to be cut. They are living systems providing food, medicine, raw materials, cultural identity, and economic security to hundreds of millions of people who often have no other fallback. Estimates suggest that around 25 percent of the income of roughly one billion people worldwide comes from NTFPs – a figure that underscores how central these resources are to global poverty reduction. Making NTFPs work sustainably for communities requires recognising their full value, securing community rights, investing in the value chain, and designing policies that put forest-dependent people – not just forest departments – at the centre of management decisions.
