India is home to one of the world’s most diverse sheep populations. With an estimated 80.7 million sheep, the country produces over 11% of its national meat supply and nearly all of its domestic wool. What makes this remarkable is not just the numbers – it’s the sheer variety of breeds, each shaped over centuries by the specific climate, terrain, and cultural practices of its home region. From the frozen high-altitude plains of Ladakh to the humid river deltas of West Bengal, Indian sheep breeds are a living record of ecological adaptation. Understanding how these breeds are distributed, how they are being improved, and which ones are at risk tells us a great deal about the future of sustainable livestock farming in India.

Breeding strategies for sheep in India

India’s sheep farming has two primary production goals: wool and mutton. The breeding strategies in place today reflect this dual focus, and they vary significantly by region and agro-climatic condition.

Improving wool production

India’s wool output is dominated by carpet-grade fiber. Of the total raw wool produced, only about 5% is apparel-grade, while 85% is carpet-grade and 10% is coarse-grade. To improve apparel wool quality, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) introduced exotic fine-wool breeds, most notably the Merino and Rambouillet, for crossbreeding with indigenous stock. An Indo-Australian Sheep Breeding Farm was established at Hissar using the Corriedale breed to supply stud rams across the country. The ICAR also launched All India Coordinated Research Projects on Sheep specifically targeting fine wool, with the aim of producing breeds capable of yielding 2.5 kg of greasy wool annually at a quality count of 58-64s.

However, random crossbreeding with exotic germplasm has had a downside. While it increased productivity and reproductive potential, it diluted the genetic integrity of local breeds that had been naturally isolated in their native breeding areas. This trade-off between productivity and genetic conservation is a central challenge in India’s wool improvement programs.

Improving mutton production

ICAR’s coordinated research projects on mutton aim to develop breeds capable of reaching 30 kg live weight at six months under intensive feeding. Selection for body weight gain at market age – typically six months – is the primary criterion, as this trait is highly heritable. Mutton breeds like Suffolk and Dorset have been imported from the UK to crossbreed with native animals and improve carcass yield and growth rate.

A key shift in modern breeding strategy is the move toward farmer participation. The current approach emphasizes working directly with farmers on their own flocks, combining scientific data recording with community-level management – a departure from top-down research models that often excluded the very people most dependent on these animals.

Regional distribution of sheep breeds

Indian sheep breeds are classified into four agro-ecological regions: the North Temperate region, the North-Western Arid and Semi-Arid region, the Southern Peninsular region, and the Eastern region. Each zone has its own dominant breeds, shaped by local climate, vegetation, and livestock traditions.

North-western arid and semi-arid region

This zone covers Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. It is the primary carpet-wool producing region in India and has the second-largest sheep population among the four zones. Key breeds here include:

Chokla – Found in the Shekhawati area of Rajasthan (Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar districts), Chokla produces fine carpet wool and is considered one of the finest carpet-wool breeds in the country. It is light to medium-sized, with a reddish-brown face devoid of wool and a dense coat.

Nali – Native to the Ganganagar, Churu, Bikaner, and Jhunjhunu districts of Rajasthan and Haryana, Nali is valued for its long-staple carpet wool.

Marwari – One of the most common breeds in Rajasthan, Marwari sheep are hardy and well-adapted to desert conditions. They are reared primarily for coarse carpet wool and mutton.

Magra – Found exclusively in Bikaner district, Magra sheep are notable for their extremely white wool used in fine carpets. Ewes cannot be bred until 18 months of age and produce single lambs.

Jaisalmeri – Native to the Jaisalmer district, this breed is adapted to the extreme heat and sparse vegetation of the Thar Desert.

North temperate region

This zone covers the Himalayan states – Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Breeds here are adapted to cold, high-altitude conditions and are primarily valued for wool. Notable breeds include Gaddi (Himachal Pradesh), Rampur Bushair (UP and HP), Poonchi and Changthangi (Kashmir/Ladakh), and Karnah and Gurez (Kashmir).

Southern peninsular region

The Southern Peninsular region has the largest sheep population in India, maintained primarily for meat production. The zone spans Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and parts of Kerala. Key breeds include:

Deccani – Found across the semi-arid Deccan Plateau in Maharashtra and Karnataka, Deccani sheep are hardy, heat-tolerant, and raised chiefly for mutton.

Mandya (Bandur) – Native to the Mandya district of Karnataka, this breed is a well-known mutton producer with good carcass quality. Research at ICAR-NBAGR has found significantly higher levels of oleic acid and histidine in Bandur sheep muscle tissue, both associated with better palatability and nutritional value.

Nellore – The most populous sheep breed in Andhra Pradesh, Nellore is a hairy meat breed known for fast growth and high carcass yield. Andhra Pradesh has around 17.6 million sheep, and the Nellore breed and its strains dominate the landscape.

Bellary, Hassan, Mecheri, Vembur, Madras Red – These are other important hairy meat breeds of the southern region, each adapted to specific microclimates within the zone.

Eastern region

The eastern region covers Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. The region contributes about 7.99% of India’s total sheep population and produces wool mostly below 36s quality, suitable only for coarse carpets and blankets, except in small pockets of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim where Tibetan sheep yield better quality carpet and apparel wool. Important breeds include Shahabadi and Chottanagpuri in Bihar and West Bengal, Ganjam and Balangir in Odisha, Bonpala in Sikkim, and Tibetan sheep in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

Endangered sheep breeds and their conservation

India’s rich diversity of sheep breeds is under serious threat. Indiscriminate crossbreeding with exotic stock, shrinking grazing lands, agricultural expansion, and the displacement of pastoral communities have all contributed to declining populations of many native breeds. Breeds whose populations have shown significant decline include Malpura, Chokla, and Jaisalmeri in Rajasthan, Munjal in Haryana, Changthangi and Tibetan from the higher Himalayan ranges, and Bonpala in Sikkim.

Bonpala

The Bonpala breed is native to southern Sikkim. Animals are tall, leggy, and well-built with fleece ranging from completely white to completely black. The wool is coarse and hairy, and shearing is done twice a year, yielding only about 400-500 grams annually. Despite a current population estimated at around 600,000, genetic studies have identified Bonpala as a priority for conservation because it belongs to a unique gene pool with low genetic diversity. Notably, its mitochondrial lineage C sets it apart from most other Indian sheep breeds, pointing to a distinct evolutionary history tied to the Tibetan Plateau.

Changthangi

The Changthangi is a dual-purpose breed reared by the nomadic Changpa community in the Changthang region of Ladakh, at altitudes ranging from 3,340 to 4,560 meters, where temperatures can drop to -40°C. It is a strongly built animal with a long-staple fleece of superior carpet quality. Migratory flock sizes range from 200 to 300 animals, and wool production ranges from 1 to 1.5 kg per animal annually. Some crossbreeding with Merino has been initiated to improve greasy-wool output, but this risks diluting the breed’s unique genetic adaptation to extreme cold and hypoxic conditions. Changthangi represents a unique gene pool with extraordinary adaptation to high-altitude cold desert environments, making it a priority for conservation programs.

Tibetan sheep

Only around 30,000 Tibetan sheep remain in India, found mainly in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. They produce an excellent, lustrous, carpet-quality wool, but their numbers have dwindled significantly since the closure of the Tibet border in 1962 cut off access to larger Tibetan flocks. Genetic studies identify Tibetan sheep as the most distinct gene pool among Indian breeds, with unique maternal lineages B and C pointing to a separate evolutionary path.

Conservation efforts

Institutional responses to this crisis are underway. A centrally sponsored scheme for conservation of threatened breeds was initiated during India’s Tenth Five Year Plan, which specifically included Bannur and Bonpala sheep. At the national level, ICAR-NBAGR maintains a National Gene Bank where somatic cells from 24 sheep breeds have been cryopreserved for ex-situ conservation. The bureau reports that over 80% of at-risk indigenous livestock breeds have now been conserved, including the majority of breeds in critical, endangered, and vulnerable categories.

In-situ conservation has also shown results. ICAR-NBAGR’s in-situ program for Poonchi sheep of Jammu & Kashmir – another endangered northern breed – successfully revived and increased its population within the native tract. Additionally, ICAR-NBAGR’s Breed Watchlist-2022 identifies and prioritizes at-risk breeds, with 20 out of 38 breeds at risk already cryopreserved in the National Gene Bank. These measures are critical: once a breed’s gene pool is lost, no crossbreeding program can recreate it.
