India holds the world’s largest buffalo population – over 109 million animals – and buffaloes contribute more than 50% of the country’s total milk production. Yet behind these headline numbers lies an extraordinary diversity of breeds, each shaped by centuries of regional selection, cultural practice, and ecological pressure. From the high-yielding Murrah of Haryana to the semi-wild Toda of the Nilgiri hills, India’s buffaloes are far more than just dairy animals. Understanding this diversity matters for farmers, policymakers, and conservationists alike.

Types of buffalo in India: riverine and swamp
All domestic buffaloes in India belong to the species Bubalus bubalis, but they split into two fundamentally different types: riverine and swamp. River buffaloes have 50 chromosomes, while swamp buffaloes have 48 – a genetic difference that underlies distinct physical and behavioral traits. River buffaloes prefer clean water for wallowing, while swamp buffaloes favor muddy ponds and marshy ground.
Riverine buffaloes make up the vast majority of India’s buffalo population and are concentrated in the northern and western states. They are primarily dairy animals, producing milk with a fat content significantly higher than cow’s milk. River buffaloes typically produce between 1,500 and 4,500 litres of milk per lactation and have a productive life of up to 20 years – longer than most cattle breeds.
Swamp buffaloes, by contrast, are found mainly in the northeastern states and parts of eastern India, particularly in Assam and surrounding areas. The domesticated buffalo species itself is believed to have originated in India, descending from the wild Bos arni still found in Assam’s forests. Swamp buffaloes are smaller and lower-yielding in milk, but they excel as draught animals – indispensable for plowing waterlogged paddy fields and navigating difficult terrain.
Murrah: India’s premier dairy buffalo
Among riverine breeds, the Murrah is the most celebrated. Originating from Rohtak, Hisar, and Jind districts of Haryana, this breed is instantly recognizable by its jet-black coat and tightly coiled horns. A well-managed Murrah buffalo can produce 1,500 to 2,500 kg of milk per lactation, with a fat content of around 7-8%. Its adaptability to varying climatic conditions and consistent performance in different management systems have made it a preferred export breed – countries including Bulgaria, Egypt, and China have used Murrah genetics to improve their local buffalo populations.
Nili Ravi: the Punjab dairy breed
The Nili Ravi is another prominent riverine dairy breed, concentrated in the Punjab region spanning both India and Pakistan. The name itself reflects its geography: “Nili” is derived from the blue waters of the Sutlej river, while “Ravi” refers to the river Ravi in Pakistan. Though originally two separate breeds, they were officially merged into one after closer study showed no essential distinction between them. The breed is easily identified by its distinctive white markings on the forehead, face, legs, and tail – a pattern locally known as “Panch Kalyani” and considered highly desirable.
Nili Ravi buffaloes produce an average of around 2,000 kg of milk per year, with butterfat content of 6-7%. They are known for a docile temperament and disease resistance, making them popular with dairy farmers across both Punjab states. In terms of overall milk production potential, they are considered comparable to Murrah.
Breeding programs and crossbreeding: creating better buffaloes
India’s buffalo breeding programs have produced new breeds by deliberately combining the strengths of established ones. Rather than simply selecting within a breed, scientists and farmers have crossed high-yielding riverine breeds with locally adapted ones to create animals better suited to specific regions and farming systems.
Mehsana: a crossbreeding success story
The Mehsana buffalo is perhaps the most successful example of this approach. Developed in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, it is named after its place of origin and is also called “Mahesani”. The breed was created by crossing Murrah bulls with Surti females – combining the Murrah’s high milk output with the Surti’s feed efficiency and adaptability to Gujarat’s climate.
The result is a medium-sized buffalo that performs well under both semi-intensive and intensive management. Milk yield ranges from 598 to 3,597 kg per lactation, with an average of around 1,988 kg and a fat content of 5.2-9.5%. Mehsana buffaloes also display good lactation persistency – meaning their milk output stays relatively consistent throughout the lactation period rather than dropping sharply. This trait makes them particularly practical for small-scale dairy farmers who rely on steady daily income from milk sales. The breed has since spread beyond Gujarat into Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and other states.
Godavari: a regional breed from the Krishna-Godavari delta
The Godavari buffalo comes from the fertile deltaic regions of the Krishna and Godavari rivers in Andhra Pradesh. This is a naturally evolved breed shaped by the demands of the delta’s agriculture rather than a deliberate crossbreeding program. Godavari buffaloes have a high milk yield of 1,200 to 1,500 kg per lactation over 305 days, with a compact, muscular build suited to the region’s warm and humid conditions. They have become economically important to farmers in the deltaic zone, serving as both milk producers and moderate draught animals.
The significance of these regional breeding programs extends beyond productivity. Institutions like ICAR’s National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) and the Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (CIRB) in Hisar are actively involved in genetic conservation, performance recording, and breed improvement through artificial insemination and embryo transfer technology. These efforts ensure that valuable indigenous genetics are not lost as farmers shift toward high-yielding commercial breeds.
Lesser-known buffalo breeds: Toda and Sambalpuri
Beyond the dairy powerhouses, India has several buffalo breeds that are small in number but significant in genetic value and cultural importance. Two of the most distinctive are the Toda of Tamil Nadu and the Sambalpuri of Odisha.
Toda buffalo: the sacred herds of the Nilgiris
The Toda buffalo is unlike any other breed in India. Found exclusively in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu at elevations of up to 2,000 metres, this semi-wild breed has been reared by the Toda tribal community for centuries. References to the Toda people’s dependence on these buffaloes date back to 1603, when early travellers noted that they had no crops and lived entirely on buffalo milk and butter.
Physically, the Toda buffalo is distinctive. They are not stall-fed but graze over long distances on open Nilgiri meadows, surviving on coarse highland grasses and enduring cold monsoon winds and winter frosts. Their most recognizable feature is their sweeping crescent-shaped horns, which can exceed 60 cm in length. Their fawn to ash-grey thick coat provides insulation in cold mountain weather. Milk yield is modest – around 500 kg per lactation – but with a fat content of about 8%, the milk is rich and used for traditional dairy products including ghee used in Toda religious ceremonies.
For the Toda community, these buffaloes are not just livestock – they are sacred. Toda temples open only when a sacred buffalo gives birth; the calf’s milk is used to prepare ghee that lights the temple lamp. The buffaloes are categorized as sacred and secular, and strict cultural protocols govern who may handle them. This deep cultural connection has helped preserve the breed’s genetic purity over centuries, but it also limits the scale of external breeding intervention.
Conservation is now urgent. A 2013 livestock breed study recorded just 3,003 pure Toda buffaloes remaining, and numbers have continued to decline due to shrinking grasslands, increased tiger predation, and younger Toda community members migrating to urban areas for employment. Researchers at the Sheep Breeding Research Station in the Nilgiris have been working to preserve the breed’s germplasm and train Toda youth in veterinary first aid and ethnoveterinary practices.
Sambalpuri buffalo: Odisha’s flood-resistant workhorse
The Sambalpuri buffalo originates from the Sambalpur region of Odisha and has long been a reliable draught and dairy animal for farming communities in the state. Sambalpuri animals are large and powerful, with a long narrow barrel and generally black body color. Males are active and good performers for draught work, while females produce milk regularly.
What makes the Sambalpuri breed particularly valuable is its adaptation to Odisha’s ecology – a state regularly affected by floods and cyclones. These buffaloes are well-suited to waterlogged conditions and have a physical resilience that allows them to continue working and producing milk in conditions where other breeds would struggle. Their moderate daily milk yield of around 6-8 litres is sufficient for household dairy needs, while their draught capacity supports rice cultivation in the state’s wet paddy fields.
Like the Toda, the Sambalpuri buffalo faces serious conservation pressure. As farmers increasingly turn to higher-yielding crossbred animals, the purebred Sambalpuri population has declined. India’s buffalo genetic diversity is progressively eroding due to unplanned crossbreeding, and many indigenous breeds lack breed societies or herd registration systems to maintain genetic records and purity. Formal recognition of the Sambalpuri breed and the establishment of dedicated breeding farms in Odisha are steps toward addressing this gap.
Why buffalo breed diversity matters
High-yielding breeds like Murrah and Nili Ravi dominate commercial dairy farming, and rightly so – they are productive and economically significant. But the genetic traits preserved in lesser-known breeds carry value that is not always visible in daily milk records. The flood tolerance of Sambalpuri buffaloes, the high-altitude cold adaptation of Toda buffaloes, and the heat tolerance of Mehsana buffaloes all represent naturally selected solutions to environmental challenges. As climate change intensifies and new disease pressures emerge, this genetic diversity could prove critical for future livestock improvement programs.
India’s buffalo breeds are also inseparable from the cultural identities of the communities that have maintained them. The Toda people’s entire ceremonial and social life is organized around their buffalo herds – a relationship that has sustained both the community and the breed for over four centuries. Losing these breeds is not just an agricultural loss; it is the erasure of living cultural heritage.
Both in-situ and ex-situ conservation efforts are being carried out under various institutional schemes in India, including cryopreservation of semen and embryos from endangered breeds. But institutional action alone is insufficient. Community engagement, economic incentives for farmers maintaining indigenous breeds, and policy support for breed-specific development programs are all necessary to secure this diversity for future generations.
