India’s pig farming landscape is a study in contrasts – ancient indigenous breeds thriving in remote island ecosystems and tribal belts, set against the expanding footprint of high-performing exotic breeds imported for commercial productivity. Indigenous pigs make up over 76% of India’s total pig population, yet many native breeds remain poorly documented, underutilized, or quietly disappearing. Understanding the characteristics of these indigenous breeds, the role crossbreeding has played in improving productivity, and why their conservation matters is essential to building a sustainable and resilient livestock system.

Indigenous pig breeds and their characteristics
India is home to remarkable diversity in its pig genetic resources. As of the latest registrations by ICAR-NBAGR, 15 indigenous pig breeds have been officially recognized, with ongoing efforts to characterize the large population of non-descript pigs that still account for the majority of the country’s pig stock. These breeds have evolved across vastly different geographic and climatic zones – from the humid tropical islands of the Andaman Sea to the high-altitude ecosystems of the Eastern Himalayas – developing traits suited to their specific environments.
The broad profile of an Indian indigenous pig is well-established: these animals are generally small, pot-bellied with an elongated face, and reach body weights of roughly 31 to 43 kg by 32 weeks of age. Their slower growth and smaller litter sizes compared to exotic breeds are offset by their capacity to thrive under low-input management – subsisting on kitchen waste, agricultural by-products, and natural foraging.
Andaman Island pig breeds
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands host some of India’s most distinctive swine genetic resources. Pigs occupy a significant place in the islands’ livestock system, constituting 27.26% of total livestock in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and playing a vital role in the livelihoods of the native people. Three main pig populations exist here: the Andamani pig, the Nicobari pig, and the endangered Andaman wild pig.
The Andamani pig, recently registered as an official breed by ICAR-NBAGR, is distributed across the Andaman group of islands. These pigs are sturdy and medium-sized, predominantly black or rusty gray in coat, fast runners, and evolved to thrive under low-input management systems. Adult males average around 71 kg in body weight, with litter sizes at farrowing ranging from 6 to 13. Critically, genetic characterization of the Andamani pig confirmed high genetic diversity, making them highly recommended for climate-resilient livestock farming in the islands.
The Nicobari pig is a registered breed reared exclusively by the Nicobari tribes of the Nicobar group of islands, where it holds deep socio-cultural and economic significance. This breed is well-adapted to the humid tropical environment, naturally scavenges for food, and shows higher prolificacy with litter sizes ranging from 8 to 10 piglets. Castrated boars and adult sows can reach body weights of 110-160 kg. Unlike commercial farming, Nicobari pigs are reared as family assets and slaughtered mainly during festivals and community ceremonies – making them deeply embedded in the tribe’s cultural fabric.
The Andaman wild pig (Sus scrofa andamanensis) is a protected subspecies and presents an interesting biological profile. These pigs are smaller with shorter limbs and a more compact body than mainland Indian pigs, with a notably higher oxygen-carrying capacity in their blood. Their diverse natural diet of fruits, roots, nuts, and invertebrates results in a nutritionally rich protein profile. The species is listed under Schedule II of the Forest Act, India, making hunting illegal, and a captive breeding programme run by the Andaman and Nicobar forest department has made progress in rebuilding the population.
Other notable indigenous breeds across India
Beyond the Andaman Islands, India’s northeastern states are particularly rich in indigenous pig diversity. The Ghoongroo of West Bengal is India’s first recognized pig breed – black with a characteristic bulldog face and exceptionally prolific, with litter sizes often reaching 6 to 12, and occasionally as high as 17. The Niang Megha of Meghalaya, the Zovawk of Mizoram (with its distinctive long midline bristles and compact black-and-white body), the Doom of Assam, and the Tenyi Vo of Nagaland each represent region-specific adaptations. The Tenyi Vo, for example, has a unique ability to be reared on zero-grain production systems, using only kitchen waste, crop residues, and backyard foraging – a quality of immense practical value for resource-poor farmers.
A common thread across all these breeds is disease resistance, climate adaptability, early sexual maturity, and the ability to produce lean, flavourful pork – traits that have sustained them across generations of low-input farming without formal management.
Crossbreeding and productivity
Despite the qualities of indigenous breeds, their low growth rates and modest litter performance limit their commercial viability. To bridge this gap, the introduction of exotic breeds – particularly the Large White Yorkshire (LWY) – has been a central strategy in India’s pig improvement programmes for several decades.
Among all exotic breeds, Large White Yorkshire is the most commonly used in crossbreeding programmes across various parts of India, owing to its faster growth, high prolificacy, large litter size, efficient mothering ability, and shorter generation interval. Crossbreeding with LWY has been implemented under the All India Coordinated Research Project on Pigs with the goal of augmenting the productivity of indigenous stock.
The results have been measurable. LWY breed pigs reached sexual maturity 28.7% faster and produced 41.9% more piglets per farrowing than local pigs, while net profit per pig was about 79% higher. When LWY boars are crossed with indigenous desi sows, the offspring combine faster growth with a degree of inherited disease resistance and environmental adaptability from the maternal side. These crossbred pigs typically reach market weight 2-3 months earlier than pure indigenous breeds while retaining reasonable hardiness.
Regional crossbreeding success stories
Crossbreeding strategies have been adapted to regional conditions with promising results. In Kerala, Ankamali × Yorkshire crosses have shown good growth performance while retaining climate adaptability. In India’s northeastern hill region, a targeted programme used the indigenous Niang Megha pig and the exotic Hampshire to develop the HN-75 crossbred line. After six generations of selection and inter-se mating, HN-75 crossbreds demonstrated improved growth rates, good mothering ability, litter sizes at birth of 9.12, and a weaning percentage of 89.32% – outperforming average local pigs in smallholder production systems.
In Tamil Nadu, the TANUVAS KPM Gold – a 75% LWY crossbred – has been evaluated against purebred LWY under organized farm conditions. KPM Gold pigs showed a significantly higher litter size at weaning compared to pure LWY (7.34 vs 6.39), suggesting improved piglet survivability and better mothering ability, making crossbreeding an effective adaptation strategy for tropical farming environments.
Crossbreeding is also practical from a management standpoint. India’s Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Fisheries supports state governments in promoting improved breeds and crossbreeding to upgrade the productivity of India’s largely non-descript pig population.
Preservation and evaluation of native pigs
The productivity gains from crossbreeding come with a cost that is increasingly difficult to ignore. India’s most recent livestock census recorded a 12.03% decline in the total pig population, and there is a growing threat of genetic erosion in India’s pig genetic resources due to crossbreeding with exotic germplasm. As exotic genetics spread into previously isolated tribal farming systems, indigenous breeds face dilution, displacement, and in some cases, near-extinction.
The Nicobari pig is already classified as endangered. Both it and the Andaman Desi pig have witnessed a rapid population decline over the last two decades. The genetic continuity of Andaman island pig breeds is under threat from the introduction of modern domestic breeds, further underlining the urgency of conservation.
Why indigenous breeds are worth saving
The scientific case for conservation is strong. Studies comparing indigenous island breeds with the exotic LWY reveal that both Nicobari and Andaman Desi pigs have significantly higher genetic heterozygosity than Large White Yorkshire, indicating far greater genetic diversity – a critical buffer against disease outbreaks and climate stress. This diversity has been shaped over centuries of natural selection and cannot be recreated once lost.
Indigenous breeds also hold practical value for low-input and climate-vulnerable farming systems. They require no commercial feed, adapt to local disease pressures without pharmaceutical inputs, and their meat – often leaner and more flavourful – commands local preference. For tribal communities in particular, these animals are not just livestock; they are a part of cultural identity, festival ritual, and socioeconomic security.
Conservation efforts and policy response
ICAR-NBAGR has registered 15 indigenous pig breeds to date as part of India’s broader effort to document and protect animal genetic resources. The Bureau’s Breed Watchlist-2022 identified 38 indigenous breeds at risk, of which 20 have been cryopreserved at the National Gene Bank as a form of ex-situ conservation. Breed conservation centres in native tracts are being established for in-situ conservation. The Mission towards Zero Non-descript Animal Genetic Resources has identified 40 new potential pig populations for further characterization – a recognition that registration is just the first step.
In the Andaman Islands, the forest and tribal welfare departments have run a captive breeding programme for the Andaman wild pig, releasing captive-bred individuals back into the Jarawa Reserve Forest to strengthen wild populations. For the Nicobari pig, awareness and training programmes targeting tribal farmers have been initiated to build local support for conservation.
Maintaining genetic diversity during conservation is a key challenge – mean kinship-based breeding has been adopted to maximize diversity among captive populations, avoiding inbreeding while expanding herd numbers.
Balancing improvement and conservation
The tension between productivity and preservation does not require an either-or resolution. Controlled crossbreeding – where the proportion of exotic genetics is carefully managed – can improve performance without erasing indigenous traits. Research has confirmed this: pigs with a higher level of indigenous inheritance sometimes outperform those with more exotic blood, especially in harsh, resource-limited environments. Community-based breeding programmes, where farmers participate in selection and are incentivized to maintain purebred indigenous stock, offer a practical path forward that aligns conservation with livelihoods.
The broader principle is that the genetic resources built by millennia of co-evolution between Indian farmers and their pigs cannot be replaced by any amount of exotic germplasm. They are, as the ICAR-CIARI’s breed characterization work put it, highly recommended for climate-resilient livestock farming – a need that is only going to grow more pressing with time.
