While every organization’s objectives will look different depending on its size and sector, most EQOs fall under a few common categories. Let’s break them down.

Textile industry

The textile manufacturing industry is energy- and water-intensive, and has a significant environmental impact. Environmental objectives in this sector often revolve around reducing water consumption in dyeing processes, minimizing chemical discharges, and improving energy efficiency. Heating typically represents over half of the total energy demand in the textile industry in major producing economies, making decarbonization of thermal energy a key objective.

Technology and IT sector

Technology companies tend to focus on energy consumption in data centers, electronic waste management, and supply chain emissions. Cisco’s environmental management system covers a broad scope including energy management, greenhouse gas emissions, product and packaging materials, water, biodiversity and land use, solid waste, liquid effluents, and non-greenhouse gas emissions. For tech firms, Scope 3 supply chain emissions often dwarf direct operational impacts, making value chain objectives particularly important.

Energy companies face perhaps the most scrutiny, given their direct link to carbon emissions. Their objectives typically involve transitioning to renewable sources, improving operational efficiency at power plants, and reducing methane leaks. Maritime shipping giant Maersk, for example, began setting carbon reduction goals in 2008 and eventually committed to an ambitious 2040 net-zero target, recognizing that achieving these objectives required systemic change across the entire industry.

The energy sector illustrates an important point: some environmental objectives cannot be achieved by a single company alone. Industry-wide collaboration and policy support are often necessary.
