Management is one of those terms everyone uses but few pause to define properly. Whether you’re running a multinational corporation or coordinating a community cleanup drive, management plays a central role. But here’s what makes it particularly interesting – management is not just a set of rigid rules, nor is it purely instinctive. It sits at the crossroads of science and art, drawing on systematic knowledge as well as personal creativity and judgment. Let’s break down what management really means, how leading thinkers have defined it, and why its ultimate goal always circles back to productivity.

What does management actually mean?

At its simplest, management is the process of coordinating people and resources to achieve specific goals. It involves planning, organising, leading, and controlling the activities of an organisation so that it can function effectively. But this straightforward description only scratches the surface.

Management operates across every type of organisation – businesses, governments, nonprofits, hospitals, and even households. Wherever a group of people works toward a shared objective, management is at play. It is not limited to boardrooms or corner offices. A teacher managing a classroom, a project lead distributing tasks among team members, or a hospital administrator allocating beds – all of them are practising management in one form or another.

What makes the definition tricky is that management is both a function (something people do) and a discipline (a formal field of study). It has evolved from simple task supervision during the industrial era into a complex, multidimensional practice that combines data-driven decision-making with human insight.

Management as a science

When we call management a science, we mean it has a systematic body of knowledge built through observation, experimentation, and analysis. Just as physics has its laws and chemistry has its formulas, management has its own set of principles, theories, and frameworks that have been developed and tested over decades.

Characteristics that make management scientific

Several features align management with scientific disciplines. First, management relies on an organised body of knowledge. Concepts like organisational behaviour, strategic planning, and operations management form a structured curriculum taught in universities worldwide. Second, management principles are derived through observation and experimentation. Frederick Taylor’s time-and-motion studies in the early 1900s, for instance, were conducted with the rigour of laboratory experiments. Third, management establishes cause-and-effect relationships – for example, research consistently shows that clear goal-setting leads to better employee performance.

The scientific management movement, pioneered by Frederick Winslow Taylor, was the primary driver of this perspective. Taylor and his contemporaries attempted to discover the most efficient way to perform jobs, using scientific processes to evaluate and optimise work. This emphasis on reducing inefficiencies and understanding worker behaviour laid the foundation for treating management as a science-based discipline.

Why management is not a “pure” science

Despite these scientific characteristics, management differs from natural sciences like physics or biology in one critical way – it deals with human beings. People are unpredictable. They think, react, and behave differently even under identical circumstances. As a result, management principles cannot be applied with the same precision as scientific laws. A motivational technique that works perfectly in one team may fall flat in another. This is why management is often classified as a social science – systematic in its approach but inherently flexible in its application.

Management as an art

If science provides the “know,” art provides the “do.” Calling management an art means recognising that effective management requires personal skill, creativity, and judgment that go beyond textbook knowledge.

What makes management an art

Art involves the practical application of knowledge to achieve desired outcomes. A manager may understand every theory of motivation but still need intuition and experience to figure out what drives a particular employee. This personal, creative element is what separates a competent manager from an exceptional one.

Consider a few parallels. A musician knows the seven notes of music, but what makes their performance unique is how they combine those notes creatively. Similarly, a manager knows the principles of delegation, communication, and leadership – but how they apply those principles in a high-pressure situation is a deeply personal, skill-based act. Every manager improves through practice and experience, learning from mistakes much like any artist refining their craft.

Henry Mintzberg, a prominent management scholar, supported this view through his research. He found that real managers did not spend their days in calm, rational deliberation. Instead, their work was fragmented, filled with interruptions, and required constant adaptation – far more art than science in practice.

Peter Drucker’s “liberal art” perspective

Peter Drucker, widely regarded as the father of modern management, described management as a “liberal art.” He used this term because management engages with fundamentals like knowledge, wisdom, and leadership, while simultaneously being concerned with practice and real-world application. Drucker was critical of treating management purely as a science because, as he argued, the assumptions and “facts” of management change over time as society and the business environment evolve. What worked for organisations in the 1950s may not work today – and that adaptability is more art than science.

Management as both science and art

The reality is that management is not exclusively one or the other. It is a blend of both science and art, and the most effective managers are those who master this combination.

Science provides the foundation – the theories, data, and frameworks that inform decision-making. Art provides the execution – the creativity, emotional intelligence, and situational awareness needed to apply that knowledge in the real world. As many management scholars have noted, science supplies the knowledge while art handles the application of that knowledge and skills. Successful managers are those who have mastered both the theoretical “know-how” and the practical “doing.”

A helpful way to think about it: science is the root, and art is the fruit. You need a strong root system of knowledge to produce results, but without the creative, adaptive branches of artful practice, that knowledge remains theoretical and disconnected from reality.

Key definitions by influential thinkers

Management has been defined in many ways by many thinkers. Here are some of the most significant definitions that have shaped how we understand this discipline.

Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915)

Known as the Father of Scientific Management, Taylor approached management from an engineering perspective. He described the art of management as knowing exactly what you want people to do and then ensuring they do it in the most efficient and cost-effective way. His 1911 work, The Principles of Scientific Management, introduced the idea that work processes should be guided by scientific observation rather than tradition or guesswork. Taylor’s four core principles – developing a true science for each task, scientifically selecting workers, fostering cooperation between management and labour, and dividing responsibilities equitably – remain foundational to management thought.

Henri Fayol (1841-1925)

French industrialist Henri Fayol offered a functional definition of management. He stated that to manage is to forecast and plan, to organise, to command, to coordinate, and to control. Fayol’s perspective was broader than Taylor’s. While Taylor focused on shop-floor efficiency, Fayol looked at management from the top down, identifying the key functions that every manager – regardless of industry – must perform. His 14 principles of management, including unity of command, division of work, and esprit de corps, remain widely studied.

Peter Drucker (1909-2005)

Drucker defined management as a multi-purpose organ that manages a business, manages managers, and manages workers and work. This definition, from his landmark 1954 book The Practice of Management, captured the layered nature of the discipline. For Drucker, management was not just about operational efficiency – it was about prioritising the development and well-being of people, not just the bottom line, to succeed. He introduced concepts like Management by Objectives (MBO), where managers and employees collaboratively set measurable goals aligned with organisational aims.

Mary Parker Follett (1868-1933)

Follett provided one of the most quoted definitions in management history, describing it as the art of getting things done through people. This deceptively simple statement shifted the focus from processes and systems to human relationships and collaboration. Though some scholars find this definition too narrow, it remains powerful because it highlights a truth every manager eventually discovers – your success depends on your ability to work through and with others.

George R. Terry (1877-1955)

Terry defined management as a distinct process consisting of planning, organising, actuating, and controlling, carried out to accomplish predetermined objectives using both science and art. His definition is notable because it explicitly acknowledges the dual nature of management – it is both a systematic process and a creative endeavour.

The common goal: enhancing organisational productivity

Despite their differences in emphasis and perspective, all these definitions share a common thread – management exists to help organisations achieve their goals more effectively and efficiently.

What productivity means in management

Productivity, in the management context, is about getting the best possible output from available resources – whether those resources are people, money, materials, or time. It is not simply about working harder. It is about working smarter. Good management ensures that resources are allocated wisely, efforts are coordinated, and everyone in the organisation is aligned toward shared objectives.

Taylor’s scientific management was directly aimed at increasing productivity by eliminating waste and standardising best practices. Drucker’s MBO framework improved productivity by ensuring that managers and employees worked together toward clearly defined, measurable goals. Fayol’s functional approach improved productivity by providing managers with a clear framework for organising their responsibilities.

Productivity beyond profit

An important point Drucker repeatedly emphasised is that productivity is not just about profit. He argued that turning a profit is merely a yardstick for measuring success – the true mission of an organisation is based on the results it hopes to achieve beyond itself. A hospital’s productivity might be measured in patient outcomes. A school’s productivity might be measured in student achievement. An environmental agency’s productivity might be measured in conservation impact. In each case, management’s role is to ensure that the organisation’s resources are directed toward these meaningful outcomes.

People are the core of productivity

Every management thinker, from Taylor to Drucker to Follett, ultimately circled back to the same insight – people are the most important resource. Taylor emphasised selecting and training workers scientifically. Drucker believed that managers should invest in developing their team members. Follett defined the entire discipline through the lens of human collaboration. No matter how efficient your systems are, productivity ultimately depends on how well you manage, motivate, and develop the people within your organisation.

Why understanding the definition of management matters

You might wonder why debating whether management is an art or a science even matters in practical terms. The answer is that how you define management shapes how you practise it.

If you see management only as a science, you might rely too heavily on data and standard procedures while ignoring the human dynamics of your team. If you see it only as an art, you might make decisions based purely on instinct without leveraging proven frameworks and evidence. The most effective approach – and the one endorsed by virtually every major management thinker – is to combine both perspectives.

Modern organisations face complex challenges: rapid technological change, diverse workforces, global competition, and shifting consumer expectations. Navigating these challenges requires managers who can draw on systematic knowledge and adapt creatively to each unique situation. Understanding that management is both a science and an art equips you with this flexibility.
