The concept of competency goes much deeper than simply knowing facts or having a skill. Professor David McClelland, an influential psychologist from Harvard University, helped shape our modern understanding of competencies through his groundbreaking work in the 1970s. He defined a competency as an underlying characteristic of a person that leads to effective or superior performance in a job.

This means competencies are not surface-level attributes. They represent a combination of several elements working together: your knowledge base, your practical skills, your motivations, and even your personal traits. When these elements combine effectively, they produce consistent, high-quality performance. Research conducted by McClelland and the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India across multiple countries confirmed that certain competencies directly correlate with superior entrepreneurial performance.

Knowledge: the foundation

Knowledge forms the bedrock of competency, but it alone isn’t enough. When we talk about knowledge in this context, we’re referring to the body of information and facts that you’ve accumulated through education, reading, and experience. For a waste management entrepreneur, this might include understanding recycling processes, environmental regulations, or market trends in sustainability.

However, here’s the critical distinction: possessing knowledge doesn’t automatically translate to competence. You might know everything about composting technology from textbooks, but if you can’t apply that knowledge to design an effective waste processing system, the information remains theoretical. Knowledge is necessary, but it’s just the starting point. The real power comes from knowing how to use what you know.

From information to application

Consider two entrepreneurs who both attended the same waste management seminar. They received identical information about biogas production. One goes home and files away the handouts. The other immediately starts sketching plans for how this technology could work in their local context, considering specific waste sources and potential customers. The difference? The second entrepreneur knows how to bridge the gap between information and action.

Skill: translating knowledge into action

If knowledge is what you know, skill is your ability to demonstrate a sequence of behaviors that achieve a specific goal. Skills are observable and measurable. You can see someone negotiating a contract, managing a team, or operating machinery. These are skills in action.

The pathway to acquiring knowledge differs fundamentally from how we develop skills. You gain knowledge through reading, listening, and studying. But skills? Those come through practice, repetition, and hands-on experience. You can read a hundred books about leadership, but becoming a skilled leader requires actually leading people, making mistakes, learning from them, and improving over time.

The practice principle

Think about learning to drive. You study the rules of the road, memorize traffic signs, and understand how an engine works. That’s knowledge. But the skill of driving only develops when you get behind the wheel, practice coordinating the clutch and accelerator, and learn to judge distances. The same applies to entrepreneurial skills like pitching to investors, managing cash flow, or resolving team conflicts. Practice transforms knowledge into demonstrable ability.

The driving forces: motives and traits

Now we come to the less visible but equally crucial components: motives and traits. These internal forces drive how consistently you apply your knowledge and skills. They’re the “why” behind your actions.

Motives represent your recurrent concerns or desires that push you toward specific goals. Achievement motivation, one of McClelland’s key concepts, drives people to excel and succeed. An entrepreneur with strong achievement motivation doesn’t just want to run a business; they’re driven by an inner need to build something excellent, to overcome challenges, and to see tangible results from their efforts.

Understanding traits

Traits are your characteristic ways of responding to situations. They’re relatively stable patterns in how you behave. A sense of efficacy, for instance, is a trait that makes some people naturally believe they can influence outcomes through their actions. When faced with a setback, someone with this trait thinks about solutions rather than giving up.

For entrepreneurs, certain traits prove particularly valuable. Persistence helps you push through the inevitable obstacles. Adaptability allows you to pivot when plans don’t work out. Self-confidence enables you to make decisions even with incomplete information. These aren’t skills you practice; they’re ingrained patterns of thinking and behaving that shape how you approach every challenge.

Competencies in the entrepreneurial context

When we bring all these elements together, we arrive at a comprehensive understanding of entrepreneurial competencies. According to researcher Bird’s definition, entrepreneurial competencies are underlying characteristics including knowledge, motives, traits, self-images, social roles, and skills that result in venture creation, survival, and growth.

This definition is powerful because it recognizes that successful entrepreneurship isn’t about having one brilliant skill or knowing one crucial fact. It’s about possessing and integrating multiple dimensions of capability. Your knowledge tells you what can be done. Your skills enable you to do it. Your motives drive you to keep doing it even when it’s difficult. Your traits shape how you do it.

Why this matters for waste management entrepreneurs

In the waste management sector, this integrated approach is especially relevant. You need technical knowledge about waste processing, regulatory knowledge about environmental laws, and market knowledge about customer needs. You need skills in operations management, team leadership, and business development. You need the motivation to persist through challenges like securing permits or changing community behaviors. And you need traits like innovation-orientation to develop new solutions for waste problems.

The encouraging news? While some competencies might come naturally to you, research has consistently shown that entrepreneurial competencies can be developed through education, training, and deliberate practice. Understanding what competencies you need is the first step toward building them.
